A Top-Notch Team With No Weak Links

When she purchased a 1920s house in downtown Pendleton, Lisa K. Haller knew she would need to address some issues before listing it as a rental property.

“There was basically standing water in the basement when I bought it,” she said, “and I could smell dampness throughout the house.”

Initially, Lisa called another company for a quote to waterproof the basement and check for foundation issues.

“They tried to sell me on a whole new foundation; they wanted me to put a boatload of money into the structural part. I didn’t feel comfortable with what they were telling me,” said Lisa, who has a mechanical engineering degree.

She decided to call Michaelis Corporation after reading several positive reviews online. Estimator Dave Harting met with her at the house.

“I challenged him and asked a lot of good questions, and I liked what he had to say,” Lisa said. “He was straightforward with me and I appreciated that.”

Dave felt Lisa’s structural issues were not a significant problem and recommended she put the bulk of her money into waterproofing and renovation instead.

“He said if it was his property, he would dry out the basement, fix the foundation, put in an egress window and add a bedroom to the lower level,” Lisa said. “Dave didn’t try to sell me on something I didn’t need. Instead, he helped me think bigger picture on how I could maximize my rental income.”

Lisa said the team took the time to care about what was important to her, even going out of their way to find materials that were just the style she wanted.

She was so pleased with the initial job that she decided to have Michaelis add a second egress window. She ended up finishing the entire lower level, turning her two-bedroom, one-bath home into a four-bedroom, two-bath home.

“I’m thrilled with the outcome,” Lisa said. “It turned out to be one of the best phone calls I’ve ever made.”

She intends to work with Michaelis again, to add egress windows to another rental property she owns.
“Michaelis was instrumental in making something out of nothing for me,” Lisa said. “I’m sincerely grateful.”
